AWS Budgets

AWS Budgets is a service designed for tracking and forecasting AWS costs. It allows us to set custom budget thresholds and receive notifications when usage or costs exceed the set limits. It is ideal for monitoring and alerting, but not for in-depth cost analysis like AWS Cost Explorer.

  1. AWS Budgets focuses on tracking and alerting to help keep costs within budget.
  2. AWS Cost Explorer provides detailed breakdowns and granular visualizations of usage and costs.

Key Features

  1. Track costs and usage: Monitor overall usage or specific services.
  2. Forecasting: Set budgets for future periods based on historical data.
  3. Alerts: Receive email or SMS notifications when actual costs exceed the budgeted amount.
  4. Granular Budget Types:
    • Cost budget: Track overall cost.
    • Usage budget: Track service usage.
    • Savings Plans budget: Track usage against Savings Plan commitments.
  5. No detailed analysis: AWS Budgets is designed for tracking and alerting rather than detailed breakdowns.

Limitations for Detailed Cost Analysis

  1. Does not provide granular filtering (e.g., by instance type).
  2. No graphical representation or detailed visualizations.
  3. Not intended for historical comparisons (e.g., last month vs. this month).
